Zafar Iqbal Kalanauri, Mediator & Advocate Supreme Court of Pakistan, is a lawyer by third generation practicing since 1986. He is one of the leading trial lawyers of Lahore having expertise in the following areas,

Mr. Kalanauri is currently a Senior Partner at the law firm Zafar Kalanauri & Associates.

Mr. Kalanauri has resolved a number of disputes through Mediation for which he got training from leading mediators of the world. He is the Executive Director of Pakistan Alternate Dispute Resolution Centre, the only private forum in Pakistan where the experts in different fields resolve disputes out side the court room using different ADR mechanisms. Presently, Mr. Kalanauri is engaged as an Alternative Dispute Resolution Expert, for Technical Assistance Project for Strengthening of Institutional Capacity for Judicial and Legal Reforms in Pakistan by the Asian Development Bank. He has also drafted Rules of Mediation & Conciliation for Court Annexed ADR under Section 89-A Civil Procedure Code.

Mr. Kalanauri is also a Member ADR/Mediation Legislative Committee of Federal Minister of Law Justice & Parliamentary Affairs on law reforms including new draft of Section 89A and full-fledged Law on Mediation. He is also a Member ADR/Mediation Working Group ADR/Mediation Pilot Project at Karachi for Institutionalizing Mediation in Pakistan of International Finance Corporation IFC (World Bank Group) and Chief Justice of Sindh High Court.

Mr. Kalanauri has also drafted Model Rules of Business (RoBs) for Musalihat Anjuman under Gender Justice - Musalihat Anjuman Project (GJTMAP) of Government of Pakistan and UNDP for Constitution and Mobilization of the Musalihat Anjumans in all Union Councils in the pilot districts.

Mr. Kalanauri is presently also a Member Steering Committee National Law University a project of Higher Education Commission and Member Legal Education Commission formed by Supreme Court of Pakistan.

Due to his educational background as an electronics engineer, he regularly use Audio Visuals aids for teaching, training and presentations. In this regards Mr. Kalanauri has also produced a few Training Videos on legal issues for training purposes.

Mr. Kalanauir is also an independent, non-profit affiliate of National Legal Education Network, working to improve Legal Education in Pakistan. He serves on committees at local, state and national levels dealing with legal education reform.

Mr. Kalanauri has an extensive international exposure:

    Visited USA four times on the invitation of Institute for the Study & Development of Legal Systems (I.S.D.LS), San Francisco to study the USA legal system. Especially with regard to the implementation of different ADR Mechanisms like Case Management, Court Settlement, Early Neutral Evaluation, Non-Binding Arbitration and Mediation for quick resolution of disputes, as an alternative to adversarial system.

    Continuously involved, as leader of the core group, with the Civil Justice Reform Project being carried by the ISDLS and USIS, Pakistan since 1997, which successfully ran pilot projects for expeditious disposal of Family cases and Commercial Cases by use of Case Management & Mediation Techniques.

    Represented Pakistan in a number of seminars, workshops and conferences in USA, UK, France, China, Bangladesh and Singapore.

Mr. Kalanauri also has over 70 articles published in leading law journals and newspapers on legal, political, human rights and social issues.

Mr. Kalanauri was elected as the youngest ever President of Lahore Bar Association (1996-97) the largest District Bar of Asia. He is a courageous leader in an area of critical importance, the Lawyers Community of Pakistan, their rights and their productive and humane integration into the society.

As a law reformer. Mr. Kalanauri’s achievements are diverse and high-impact. As Chairman Law Reforms, Legal Education & Examination Committees of Punjab Bar Council prepared and got implemented the Written Bar Entrance Examination for the new entrants to the legal profession in Punjab.
